How are words counted?
With your browser’s built-in word segmentation for the text’s language, so languages without spaces between words, like Chinese, Japanese and Thai, are counted properly. Numbers count as words; punctuation does not.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time assumes 238 words a minute, the average silent reading speed for adults; speaking time assumes 150 words a minute.
Do emoji count as one character?
Here, yes: characters are counted as you see them. Some platforms count differently — X counts most emoji as two characters, and an SMS with emoji holds 70 characters instead of 160.
