Server-side GTM

Google Tag Manager link tracking with a server-side container

Letlink posts each short-link click, and each approved conversion, to your own server-side Google Tag Manager container, so every tag you already run there can act on link traffic without a tag on the redirect.

Short answer

Google Tag Manager link tracking routes link clicks into GTM, where tags decide which tools receive them. Letlink sends every recorded click as a link_click event, and every approved sale, lead and sign-up as purchase, generate_lead and sign_up, to your server-side GTM container in the GA4 Measurement Protocol format. It needs a tagging server with a Measurement Protocol client and is on Growth at $8.90 a month and Ultimate at $39.90.

Features

What reaches your GTM container

Your tagging server, not a browser tag

Letlink POSTs to your tagging server’s Measurement Protocol path from its own servers. Nothing loads on the redirect, so clicks arrive even when the visitor blocks scripts or scans a QR code.

link_click for every click

Each recorded click arrives as link_click with short_code, link_type, variation, destination_url, the UTM values and the click_id.

Conversions as GA4 events

Approved sales arrive as purchase with your order ID as transaction_id, value and currency; leads as generate_lead; sign-ups as sign_up; custom events under your own event name, cleaned to GA4 rules.

Configure destinations once

Once the event is in the container, any tag there — GA4, Google Ads, Meta, a warehouse — can pick it up, so you set up each tool in GTM instead of once per integration.

Join clicks and conversions

Every conversion carries conversion_id and the click_id of the click it came from, so you can join them in BigQuery or deduplicate in your tags.

Location and client ID

client_id is the same device fingerprint the dashboard uses for unique visitors, and the visitor’s country is sent in user_location when known.

What it is not

It does not install a web container on your site or load gtm.js anywhere. It needs a server-side container you run; a web container alone cannot receive these hits.

Use cases

Why route short-link data through GTM

One place for every destination

Teams that already fan events out from a server container add link clicks and conversions to the same pipeline instead of connecting each tool to Letlink.

Warehouse joins

Clicks and conversions land in BigQuery through your container, keyed by click_id, next to the rest of your event data.

Revenue into Google Ads and GA4

purchase events with order IDs reach whichever tags you trigger on them, even for sales reported by postback from an affiliate network.

Step by step

How to connect short links to Google Tag Manager

  1. Add a Measurement Protocol client

In your server container open Clients → New, choose Measurement Protocol, set the activation path to /mp/collect and save.

  2. Trigger your tags on it

Add or reuse a GA4 tag, and any other tags, triggered by that client, then submit the container.

  3. Connect it in Letlink

On Growth or Ultimate, open Integrations → Google Tag Manager (server-side), enter the tagging server URL, the G- Measurement ID and the client path, and save. The API secret is optional.

  4. Send a test event

Open the container’s Preview mode, press Send test event in Letlink, and watch the request arrive.

How do I track short-link clicks in Google Tag Manager?

Connect your server-side GTM container under Integrations → Google Tag Manager (server-side) with its tagging server URL and a GA4 Measurement ID. Letlink then sends every recorded click as a link_click Measurement Protocol hit to the container, where your tags can act on it. It is available on Growth at $8.90 a month and Ultimate at $39.90.

Does it work with a web container?

No. The integration sends hits from Letlink’s servers to a server-side container with its own HTTPS address and a Measurement Protocol client. A web container runs in the browser and cannot receive them. Nothing is installed on your website.

Which conversions are sent to GTM?

Every approved conversion: sales as purchase with transaction_id, value and currency, leads as generate_lead, sign-ups as sign_up and custom events under your own name. GTM always receives conversions, even when the workspace does not forward them to the ad platforms. Conversion tracking itself is reported by postback, the JavaScript snippet or the API.

Why is nothing arriving in my container?

Check that the tagging server URL is HTTPS and reachable from the internet; a 404 usually means no client claimed the path, so compare it with the Measurement Protocol client’s activation path. Preview mode only shows requests while it is open, so send the test event after opening it. Bots and clicks past the monthly cap are never sent.

Do I need the API secret?

Only if the GA4 tag in your container forwards hits to Google with a Measurement Protocol secret. It is optional in Letlink. Anyone who knows your tagging server URL and Measurement ID can send hits to it, so rotate the secret in GA4 if it may have leaked.
